The Penn State Nittany Lions may have found their starting slot receiver in Trebor Pena—but the deal isn’t done just yet. Pena visited Happy Valley on Friday, but left uncommitted, sparking questions about his future and Penn State’s strategy in the transfer portal.
Pena, who transferred from Syracuse, brings experience and productivity to the table. After struggling early in his college career, Pena emerged under head coach Fran Brown in 2024, finally finding his stride in a more explosive offense. While he’s not considered a superstar, Pena is widely viewed as a significant upgrade over Penn State’s current slot options.
According to On3, Penn State remains the frontrunner to land Pena. However, the longer he delays a decision, the more it opens the door for other programs—particularly Miami. The Hurricanes are known for aggressive NIL offers, and if this decision boils down to compensation, Miami could easily make a late push.
If Penn State lands Pena, he would likely start in the slot next to Kyron Hudson at the X and Devontez Ross at the Z, forming a dependable trio. While this boosts the first-team unit, it also raises questions about the future of current wideouts like Kaden Saunders, Liam Clifford, and redshirt freshman standout Tyseer Denmark. Saunders, in particular, could see his role vanish, potentially prompting a transfer.
Still, Pena has only one year of eligibility left, which could make the situation easier for younger receivers. Denmark, for instance, has the versatility to play all three wideout spots and the time to develop. Saunders and Clifford’s futures, however, feel more uncertain.
Ultimately, Pena would provide a veteran presence with upside, helping Drew Allar and the offense take the next step. But Penn State needs a decision soon, or they risk missing out on both Peña and any potential fallback targets.
