While Penn State’s pursuit of Syracuse wideout Trebor Pena could strengthen the starting lineup, it may also lead to some unfortunate side effects—particularly in the wide receiver room.
Pena’s expected role would be as the starting slot receiver, a position already filled by several candidates. Kaden Saunders, Liam Clifford, and Tyseer Denmark are all battling for that job this spring. If Pena arrives, one—or more—of them may look elsewhere.
Saunders is the most at-risk. Like Pena, his skill set is best suited for the slot, and he’s near the end of his college career. With few alternative positions, his path to playing time could vanish overnight. Denmark, on the other hand, is more versatile. He can slide into other spots and still see the field. Clifford may stick around simply due to his deep ties to the program and relationship with James Franklin.
The bigger picture: Is it worth potentially losing two contributors to gain one starter?
Depth is critical for any playoff-contending team, especially in a new era of expanded College Football Playoff games. Losing Saunders or Denmark would shrink that depth and put added pressure on a position that’s already considered a weakness.
While Franklin and his staff may see Pena as a clear upgrade, the collateral damage could hurt in the long run. If this move leads to a net loss in WR depth, it might not be the slam-dunk addition some fans are hoping for.
